STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Jose Davila and Melissa Kraker took the top spots at the fifth annual Spring Meltdown Mother’s Day 5-K Run/Walk. They outlasted more than 40 runners Sunday at Freshkills Park.

After a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the 3.1-mile trek went off without a hitch on the out-and-back-loop.

Davila, a 45-year-old Island veteran road racer, displayed his strength and experience over a younger Martin Larrosa, crossing the finish line in an uncontested time of 18 minutes, 46 seconds.
