Bernard Del Rey “Feed The Hungry” Fund
Mid-Island Rotary established the Del Rey Fund in memory of Bernard Del Rey, to provide food deliveries to food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Staten Island. Locally we face a significant and growing need for food security, leading to record food pantry use, especially among working families and children, with so many struggling to afford adequate, nutritious food. As this need exists for many families, we are committed to fighting hunger in our community.
Bernard Del Rey, CPA, was a devoted family and businessman, and former Mid-Island Rotary Club President, who we lost too soon in 2018. If you knew Bernard personally, you would remember how passionate he was about being a Rotarian. Through his actions, Bernard reminded us that food
insecurity and hunger plagues the lives of many around us. At the end of many of our weekly meetings, Bernard would subtly put his money in an envelope and pass the envelope around to our members – with the intention of collecting additional funds – Bernard would then take whatever
amount was collected and deliver those funds to a local food pantry or soup kitchen. Quiet actions like that, with pure intentions of goodwill, gave the Mid Island Rotary Club the idea to carry on Bernard’s commitment by establishing and naming this fund in his honor.
We generally deliver 30-40 cases of food monthly to local food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Staten Island. Through 2025, this fund has allowed the Mid Island Rotary Club to deliver over $50,000 of food directly to food pantries, soup kitchens, food closets and community kitchens. In addition, once or twice a year our members have prepared and served meals directly to the homeless and hungry.
We continue to seek out the needs around us and are continually looking for contributions. If you’d like to support the Del Rey Fund and Help Feed the Hungry, simply click on the link below or use the QR code
