Rotary International

Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary’s people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

Formed in 1957, the Rotary Club of North Shore continues to be a vital and active member of Rotary International.  Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Staten Island, the then District Governor, Vernon Hampton, a member of the Staten Island Club, appointed A. Richard Boera to be the district extension representative to form the Rotary Club of North Shore.

With 12 prospective members attending the first extension meeting at the former Old Mill Restaurant on May 23, 1957, the club began to take shape.  On June 27, 1957 the club held its first organizational meeting at The Staaten House (know known as LiGreci’s Staaten) and elected Thorleif B. Wetlesen as its first President.

Rotary International issued the Rotary Club of North Shore our charter on August 14, 1957.  The charter was presented to the Club at its first Charter Night Celebration, held on September 19 of that year.

During that event, 28 new members were officially inducted.  Some 126 Rotarians from the District, including 4 Past District Governors, gathered to celebrate the event at The Staaten House.

One of these 18 charter members, the late Nick Nicotera, went on to become the Club’s eighth President and first recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
